Nîmes University Hospital: Distrust then trust after the arrival of the new director and the ousting of Nicolas Best

He was not expected at the turning point, but the arrival of Frédéric Rimattei, the new director of the Nîmes University Hospital, has caused a lot of concern. It should be remembered that Nicolas Best, the previous director, indicted for favouritism and passive corruption in public procurement and works funds, had been removed rather abruptly in November 2023, stunning a good part of the staff. Michel Prudhomme, president of the CME, agrees:“It is true that we supported Nicolas Best, a competent and highly regarded man, with whom we had made progress on a lot of projects. We were worried about the future given the way his term ended. We were afraid of suffering a form of retaliation with a new director imposed. But we were able to have the choice, which reassured us. We were attached to strong medical-administrative governance, we were reassured there too, we work in perfect harmony. And we no longer have any concerns about the continuation of the projects”.

“We are going to create 40 hospital practitioner positions”

And he also insists on the attractiveness of a dynamic university hospital that has managed to make its place alongside that of Montpellier despite some tensions in child psychiatry,“a discipline that is really suffering, we have difficulty recruiting. In psychiatry, on the other hand, we have a new governance, with young and dynamic women who are leading a project co-constructed in the Gard region with the Mas Careiron in Uzès and Alès. There is a real dynamic in the commitment of young people in psychiatry”, he rejoices.

Even if Covid has disrupted the relationship to work and opened up new questions about the meaning of vocation, “we remain attractive, we are going to create 40 hospital practitioner positions this year, including around ten on new medical projects that make people want to come and work here. Young people see that the projects are dynamic, that the technical platform is very modern… after that, we have to keep!”

And the gigantism of the Montpellier University Hospital ? Not even scared… “there is a form of emulation that has made us progress. We realize that the vision of our Montpellier colleagues on Nîmes has changed and it is extremely pleasant. Similarly, there is no rivalry between our two cancer institutes, on the contrary, it is very fluid.”
