“Not just a piece of fabric”: Bruno Retailleau wants to ban the veil for chaperones on school trips and at university

Bruno Retailleau hopes that the "fight against the Islamism of the Muslim Brotherhood" will be "one of the major priorities of the coming months", in an interview with the Parisien published online Monday evening.

On the eve of the commemoration of the attacks against Charlie Hebdo and the Hypercacher at Porte de Vincennes in January 2015, the Minister of the Interior considers that “France could be hit again“, because “the battle against Islamic totalitarianism is far from being won”.

Bruno Retailleau particularly targets “political Islam” which “threatens our institutions and national cohesion“.

“I hope, he continues, that one of the major priorities of the coming months will be the fight against the Islamism of the Muslim Brotherhoods”, which he accuses of making of “entrism“.

He believes that to fight against this “entrism“, it will be necessary “to extend the scope of secularism to other public spaces, for example to sports competitions or school trips”.

In his eyes, “the 2004 law on religious symbols must be applied to these activities: school trips are school outside the walls”.

No veil at university

“The chaperones do not have to be veiled. The veil is not just a piece of fabric: it is a banner for Islamism, and a marker of the inferiority of women compared to men”, he argues, hoping for a legislative measure in this sense. The minister also speaks out in favor of banning the wearing of the veil at university.

Believing that “the breeding ground for terrorism is separatism and political Islam”, he assures “Muslim citizens that (the government) is not waging a fight against their religion, which is disfigured by Islamism, but a fight against a political ideology that disfigures their religion.”

“What is at stake, he says, are the conquests of the West such as gender equality, freedom of conscience or our French secularism”.

He also adds that there is “also the migratory issue which is also linked, in part, to that of Islamism”.

Regarding immigration, which he wishes to limit and which is a matter of debate within the government, Bruno Retailleau warns: “From my On the other hand, I will not give an inch on immigration, as on the restoration of public order.”
