The “off-peak” hours will be reviewed in 2025 to introduce afternoon time slots and promote electric vehicles in particular.
The “off-peak” hours at 5 p.m. will soon be over. Interviewed by France Info, the president of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), Emmanuelle Wargon, mentioned the upcoming revision of the system.

“At the CRE, we are attached to off-peak hours, but we want to reposition them because some are poorly placed, like around 7/8 a.m. or 5 p.m.”, she indicated.
She also mentioned in an interview with Figaro the possibility that the 5pm to 6pm slot becomes a full hour or that the time slots differ between summer and winter “to take into account the period of the day when solar panel production is highest”.
This revision is planned for mid-2025, and each consumer will be contacted by their energy supplier in due course. Among the CRE's projects, there is notably the creation of off-peak hours in the afternoon, particularly in summer.
“It is essential to ensure that off-peak hours remain advantageous. Today, you have to consume 30% of your energy during these periods for it to be profitable”, added Emmanuelle Wargon.
This offer has been subscribed to by “a good third of consumers”, she calculated. It allows you to have cheaper electricity at certain timess of the day by consuming “when it costs the least to the systems, in production and in the network”.
A more expensive option than the basic rate
Currently, the peak hours/off-peak hours option is more expensive than the basic rate, as EDF specifies. However, it remains interesting for those who can program their household appliances, heat a water tank or have an electric vehicle.
