The Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench on Thursday sentenced a Winnipeg man to 18 years in prison for the manslaughter of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Officer Shelby Patton.

On June 12, 2021, during a traffic stop in Wolseley, southeastern Saskatchewan, police officer Shelby Patton died after being struck by a stolen truck driven by Alphonse Stanley Traverse while the 26-year-old police officer was trying to intercept him.

In this file, the Crown asked for life imprisonment, while defense recommended 16 years in prison. Judge Michael Tochor ruled for the second option, plus a concurrent sentence of 18 months for the theft of a motor vehicle.

The judge spoke Thursday to the victim's family as well as Alphonse Stanley Traverse.

All I can say is that I sincerely wish the Patton family, and I think this also applies to Mr. Traverse, that you all may one day, ;one way or another, find peace, he said in the courtroom.

At the sentencing hearing last January, the mother of the deceased RCMP officer, Melanie Patton, said before the Court that his family fell apart following the death of his son.

The meetings are small and silent, and I dread the holidays, she testified.

For her part, Shelby Patton's wife, Mari Grobler, had transmitted a statement to the Court in which she mentions the consequences of the death of her spouse on her health.

Depression and anxiety over the loss of Shelby Patton caused intense chest pain, she wrote in her statement submitted in January. I see a psychologist every two weeks and expect to do so for many years.

Shelby Patton worked at the Indian Head RCMP detachment in Saskatchewan.
