L’Europe s& #8217;asserts itself as an essential territory in the global race for artificial intelligence: world-renowned research centers, universities prestigious, regulations that emphasize ethics, etc. A particular context in which OpenAI wishes to progress by establishing its presence in the French capital.

A new location that will be added to the already fairly dense territorial network for such a young company, with eight other offices spread between America, Asia and Europe. This clearly shows that the group, in full expansion, wishes to strengthen its roots on the Old Continent.

The French conquest: attracting large groups

The company, which now has 2,000 employees including 650 engineers, has already attracted two flagships of French industry. And not just any: Sanofi, one of the largest French, if not global, pharmaceutical groups, and Publicis, one of the global leaders in advertising and communications.

With its 250 million monthly active users, the American group bases its chatbot on a very solid economic model. A free version, preferred by a large majority of ChatGPT users, and a premium subscription version (23 euros per month), which is attracting more and more users. For now, that foundation won't budge, OpenAI told Tech&Co and the company hopes to optimize its costs without adding ads to its chatbot and accelerate its path to profitability through these new partnerships.

Beyond assistance: toward AI that anticipates and decides

OpenAI has already reduced the cost of processing its queries by nine in just 18 months, from $36 to $4 per million tokens. Tokens are the smallest units of text used by ChatGPT to process and generate language. They are pieces of words, whole words or parts of words that serve as the building blocks it uses to build text.

An optimization that has been accompanied in recent months by an expansion of its range of models. From the GPT-4o mini model, designed for consumer applications, to the more sophisticated o1, capable of emulating cognitive processes close to human thought, OpenAI has succeeded in innovating across the entire spectrum of uses.

The firm does not intend to stop there and projects are multiplying: a new Orion language model should arrive shortly and it is currently developing an even more ambitious model. Its code name “Operator” is already circulating in the specialized media and its description is more and more similar to that of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

A fully autonomous model, capable of learning the user's behavioral patterns to provide personalized services proactively. According to information from Bloomberg, this will be available from January 2025.

OpenAI therefore has a lot of work to do, which it will now decide, in part, on French soil. An implementation which confirms thatour country remains attractive to AI leaders and could, in time, attract others.

  • OpenAI has set up in Paris to strengthen its presence in Europe.
  • The group has already established partnerships with Sanofi and Publicis.
  • It is developing new AI models, including Orion and the “Operator” project expected in January 2025
