OpenAI: ChatGPT's profitability is not coming soon

These are staggering numbers. According to an article on the website The Information, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, does not expect to make a profit before 2029. To do so, it will have to generate $100 billion in revenue, given the astronomical costs of developing and running AI.

A financial abyss

According to figures obtained by our colleagues, the Californian company expects to lose $5 billion in 2024 and this figure is only expected to increase thereafter. The company is planning more than $200 billion in spending, including $44 billion for the 2023-2026 period alone.

Where do these crazy sums come from ? Between 60 and 80% of this amount is used to train its various language models. Investments in cloud computing are also massive to respond to the requests of users who are increasingly using the conversational agent on a daily basis.

OpenAI has in any case built up a war chest that allows it to see what's coming. It has just raised $6.6 billion, which brings its valuation to $157 billion. The company says:

The new funding will allow us to double down on our leadership in cutting-edge AI research, increase computing capacity and continue building tools that help people solve tough problems.

ChatGPT Prices to Rise?

The developer of ChatGPT actually hopes that its turnover will continue to grow thanks to its enterprise solutions and the increase in licensing revenues related to its various AI technologies. It is only at this price that it could therefore reach the break-even point in five years, and for the first time.

Let us also recall that, according to information from the New York Times, OpenAI is planning a big increase in ChatGPT Plus by 2029 and that its price could reach $44 per month compared to only $20 today.

To go further, we invite you to reread our previous articles on OpenAI. One of them looks at impressive figures on this technology company that never ceases to be talked about. The other focuses on the paid strategy of the firm led by Sam Altman who has signed numerous licensing agreements with major media to benefit from quality data.
