OpenAI is reportedly headed for a whopping $300 billion valuation: Here's what we know

Although it is already generating revenue, OpenAI still needs to raise funds to improve its AI models and to ensure the operation of its services. And after raising $6.6 billion, at a valuation of $157 billion, in October, the creator of ChatGPT is already looking for new investments. According to a Bloomberg article, which cites sources close to the matter, it is currently in discussions with investors to raise up to $40 billion.

The investment round would be led by the Japanese company SoftBank, which, according to a previous article by Bloomberg, would be ready to inject up to 25 billion dollars. And thanks to this new round of financing, the valuation of OpenAI could reach 300 billion dollars, provided that the fundraising reaches its objectives.

New investments to compete with tech giants

In December, OpenAI had already mentioned its investment needs. “The hundreds of billions of dollars that large companies are investing today in the development of AI show what it will really take for OpenAI to continue to pursue its mission”, the company wrote. And to attract more investment, it plans to change its structure, creating a form of American company called the Public Benefit Corporation⁠ that will issue common stock (and therefore its non-profit branch will be among the shareholders).

For now, rumors of OpenAI’s upcoming fundraising round should be treated with caution. However, it’s entirely possible that the change in structure that the creator of ChatGPT has envisioned has prompted investors to inject more money. Furthermore, even though DeepSeek has demonstrated that it is possible to create high-performance AI at a lower cost, Sam Altman indicated in a post on X that investments in infrastructure are still necessary. “[…] we believe that having more computing power is more important than ever to achieve our mission. The world is going to want to use a LOT of AI and will be really surprised by the next generation models,” he wrote.
