The lights are green for the group Le Monde (in addition to its flagship, this name unites other major French media, such as Courrier International, Télérama, Le Monde Diplomatique…). Its turnover is increasing by 2% over one year to 311 million euros in 2024, its highest level since 2017, reports Les Échos.

A winning deal with OpenAI ?

As for the newspaper Le MondeIn itself, it records a net profit of 5.8 million euros that would make many other French media outlets green with envy. To explain these excellent figures, we can already cite its circulation of 546,000 daily copies, up 10% over a year, notably thanks to very solid digital subscriptions.

It should also be noted that Le Monde is the only French press title to have signed an agreement with OpenAI that authorizes it to use its articles to form its database. Although the amount is kept secret, the business daily mentions the sum of 2 to 3 million euros.

200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000

Asked about the subject, Louis Dreyfus, chairman of the group's board of directors, responds immediately: “That's actually very far from the truth. We've always said that if we signed with OpenAI, the amount would have to be significant.” In other words, OpenAI would pay much more than the amounts initially envisaged.

OpenAI and ChatGPT addicted to the press

As a reminder, OpenAI has decided to invest in obtaining licensing agreements. Thus, no fewer than twelve publishers, including some very big names, have accepted this type of partnership. In addition to Le Monde, we also find the Americans Vox, or Condé Nast, or even the Financial Times in the United Kingdom.

These deals seem to be paying off for the technology company. According to an analysis by Originality AI, a start-up specializing in AI detection based on 1,000 news media, and relayed by Wired, the blocking rate used to concern a little over a third of websites, it has now dropped to almost a quarter. In short, these portals that once stopped the startup's robots are now more open to it. Enabling these models to benefit from better quality data.

What to remember:

  • The Le Monde group announces excellent results for 2024
  • These are linked to the progression of its diffusion
  • The company also benefits from its agreement with OpenAI which would be very lucrative
