Soon, we may have another European alternative to artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT, Gemini, or DeepSeek. The French startup Mistral already offers some of the best AI models on the market. And soon, we could also count on the technologies of OpenEuroLLM, a European consortium formed by 20 organizations that develops open source language models with the aim of supporting Europe's competitiveness.

Partners in the project include French company LightOn, German AI lab Aleph Alpha Research, universities, research centers, and EuroHPC (European High-Performance Computing) centers. OpenEuroLLM is also supported by the European Commission.

“What is unique about this initiative is that we are bringing together many leading European AI organizations in one focused effort, instead of having many small, fragmented projects,”, explains Peter Sarlin, co-leader of the alliance, as quoted by The Next Web. According to this media, OpenEuroLLM benefits from a budget of 52 million euros, as well as support in the form of computing power.

A European AI

For the moment, it is not known when the first OpenEuroLLM artificial intelligence model will be released. However, it is known that the goal of this project is to release technologies for commercial, industrial uses, as well as in public services. “The OpenEuroLLM project is in line with the imperative of improving Europe’s competitiveness and digital sovereignty,” reads the press release.

Its open source models can also be modified and adapted to the needs of different industries, as well as the needs of public services. We also know that the OpenEuroLLM models will be multilingual and the goal seems to be to develop high-performance AI that can compete with technologies developed in the United States or China.
