This is something OpenAI could have done without . A collective, very angry with the technological society, has thus leaked its Sora video generator, which is theoretically not accessible to the general public. Explanations.
Comment did they do it ?
The group published a project on the AI development platform Hugging Face. It was connected to Sora’s API. They reportedly used authentication tokens from early access to create an interface that allowed anyone to generate 10-second 1080p videos by entering a prompt with OpenAI’s tool.
After 3 hours, Sora was no longer available through this backdoor method, but many people had been able to test it. The collective claims that OpenAI was the one who shut down the project.
Why Sora is criticized ?
The people behind the initiative believe that OpenAI is pressuring early testers to sing Sora’s praises. They also feel that the compensation is inadequate for a company valued at $150 billion.
Quoted by TechCrunch, the group adds:
We are not against the use of AI technology as a tool for the arts (if we were, we probably wouldn’t have been invited to this program). What we disagree with is the way this artist program has been rolled out and how the tool is presented before a possible public release. We share this with the world in the hopes that OpenAI will become more open, artist-friendly, and supportive of the arts beyond publicity stunts.

When challenged, OpenAI responded through a spokesperson. He first clarified that the AI is only in the research preview phase. The company says it is working ” to balance creativity with robust security measures for broader use “.
She adds: ” Participation is voluntary, with no obligation to provide feedback or use the tool. We are excited to provide free access to these artists and will continue to support them through grants, events, and other programs. We believe AI can be a powerful creative tool, and we’re committed to making Sora both useful and safe.”
OpenAI has competition
Finally, artists have no obligations, other than to use AI responsibly and not share confidential development information.
OpenAI is clearly not the only company interested in launching a video generator. Its rivals Stability and Runway are hard at work on similar projects and have even approached studios and figures from the seventh art to move forward. Other tech giants are working on similar technologies. To cite just one example, Google unveiled the Veo tool at its I/O conference last May.
