PC sales will rebound strongly thanks to AI

While demand for PCs had increased during the health crisis, it subsequently collapsed, due to the macroeconomic context (the same for smartphones). And according to figures released by Counterpoint Research, in the third quarter, computer shipments were still declining worldwide. However, from next year, we anticipate a strong rebound in demand. And this strong rebound will be partly attributed to the emergence of generative artificial intelligence.

For the moment, businesses and individuals continue to limit their spending. As a result, in the third quarter of 2023, computer shipments fell 9% year-over-year, according to Counterpoint Research. But the good news is that compared to the second quarter of 2023, we see an increase. And for the research company, the worst is already behind us.

Furthermore, we also anticipate a sharp increase in demand on the computer market in 2024. In fact, we will enter a cycle of PC replacement around the world (machines that will become obsolete will be replaced). On top of that, sales will be boosted by artificial intelligence. For the past year, AIs like ChatGPT have continued to make headlines. And for their part, computer manufacturers will release new machines specially designed to exploit these AI.

“We expect global PC market shipment volume to return to pre-COVID-19 levels next year, helped by the replacement of Windows 11, the next wave of Arm PCs and AI PCs” , says the Counterpoint Research publication.

This notably mentions the development of new processors by Qualcomm, Intel and other companies for computers which will be launched from the last quarter of 2023. In addition to this, it should also be remembered that Microsoft is in the process of deploying a new assistant called Copilot on Windows 11, which is based on generative artificial intelligence.

Regarding the replacement cycle, it should be noted that Windows 10 will no longer receive updates from ;October 2015. And since Windows 11 is very demanding in terms of features, there will be many Windows 10 machines that cannot be updated to Windows 11.

At the moment, Microsoft is very discreet regarding the adoption of Windows 11. But according to unofficial data, Windows 11 is today installed on 400 million active machines.
