Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is challenging his NDP counterpart, Jagmeet Singh, to tear up his deal with the Liberals that ensures Justin Trudeau will stay in power until June 2025.

“Withdraw from the costly coalition and vote no confidence in the government in September in order to trigger an election on the carbon tax in October THIS YEAR,” he wrote in a letter to Mr. Singh.

According to the leader of the official opposition, if the NDP leader refuses to do so, he will be “forever known as 'Sellout Singh'.”

Mr. Poilievre believes Singh has so far avoided pushing for an election “so you can collect your $2.2 million taxpayer-funded pension in February.”

“But it's time for you to put Canadians before your pension,” it reads.

In his letter, Pierre Poilievre argues that voters did not give Jagmeet Singh a mandate to keep Mr. Trudeau in power.

The deal between the Liberals and NDP ensures Justin Trudeau’s minority government will have the support of Mr. Singh’s troops in key votes in the Commons that could otherwise trigger an election.

In exchange for the NDP’s support, the Liberals promise to do a series of things, such as launching a pharmacare program.
