French drivers holding the pink cardboard driving license will have to prepare for a major change: this document, which dates from 1922, will gradually be replaced by a driving license in the “carte bleue” format, which is more modern and, above all, more secure. The latter has now become the standard for over 10 years but it has not yet been adopted by long-time drivers.

A document that has become obsolete

The pink card driving license was issued until 2013 but has since become obsolete compared to the standards found in other Western countries (and more generally in the world). It is fragile (you must have torn it, at least in part), can be falsified and is no longer always recognized internationally (especially if you want to rent a vehicle).

A more secure document

Conversely, the new credit card format license is a laminated document the size of a bank card. Unlike the cardboard paper format, it is more resistant and difficult to counterfeit, but above all it is more practical to carry: you can simply put it in a wallet next to your bank card. It also has the advantage of allowing you to see your points balance online. When will it expire?

If the pink cardboard driving license does not have an official expiration date, it will no longer be valid from the year 2033. Retro format permit holders have until January 19, 2033 to request replacement with the new format.

After this date, the pink license will no longer be valid and drivers will first risk a fine of 11 euros, which may then be increased to 38 euros. In the event of failure to present a valid license (in credit card format), the fine can reach 135 euros and the vehicle may be immobilized.

You therefore have less than 10 years left to complete this process, which is simple and allows you to comply with current standards – including abroad. Note that the new license is valid for 15 years – unlike the pink license which was unlimited. You will therefore have to get into the habit of redoing it to always have an up-to-date ID photo.

What to do in the meantime ?

At the moment, it is not mandatory to change your license except in the event of loss, theft or damage. A torn license will be refused so it is advisable to replace it if necessary. The replacement request for these situations is made on the ANTS (National Agency for Secure Titles) website for 25 euros.

Otherwise, the new license is free for holders of the historic pink cardboard model. The Interior Ministry has clarified that no decision has been made regarding a replacement before 2033.
