It was ten months ago that Apple marketed its long-awaited Vision Pro, a cutting-edge space computer, almost too much so, perhaps, like its price of €3,999, out of reach for many consumers. Recently, Tim Cook explained that this same Vision Pro had been created for “early adopters”, i.e. people who want to take advantage of future technologies before everyone else. Apple would therefore not be focused on sales volume, but rather on the growth of the ecosystem.

Of course, with its very “niche” side, Apple's Vision Pro headset is not a commercial success. The same goes for another device dedicated this time to virtual reality: Sony's PS VR2. Indeed, launched at the beginning of 2023 at a price of €599, the Japanese giant's second VR headset is struggling to convince, despite some very enticing titles, but still far (too) rare…

But according to the well-informed Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Sony and Apple have entered into a form of collaboration to allow the PS VR2 controllers to be adapted to the Vision Pro headset. It is even the American giant that is said to be at the origin of this rapprochement, in order to develop the “gaming” dimension of its space computer.

For Apple, it would therefore be a question of getting closer to Sony and its very good VR technology. Indeed, even though the PS VR2 remains a commercial failure, with a handful of decent games and far too few prospects in the eyes of many players to dare to spend the sum necessary for its acquisition, the headset and controllers provided are of excellent quality.

By adopting the PS VR2 controllers, Apple's Vision Pro headset could offer a whole new gaming dimension, but also optimize many uses through the spatial computer. The other advantage would be purely economic, since it would not be a question of Apple developing a new accessory, but of adopting an existing one.

It remains to be seen whether this partnership will lead to the availability of PS VR2 controllers directly on Apple stores. The American giant already offers Sony's DualSense controller on its official store, dedicated to the PS5, but compatible with the Apple ecosystem. A controller displayed however at the prohibitive (and rather incomprehensible) price of €89.95 at Apple…

Recently, as part of SIGGRAPH Asia 2024 in Tokyo, Sony offered visitors the chance to try a demo on PlayStation VR 2… without a controller! The whole thing is based on a head tracking system, thanks to the headset's front camera, which will follow the position of the user's hands (like on a Meta Quest). A feature that is not yet present on the PS VR2, but which could therefore arrive soon.
