Police kill gunman barricaded in east Calgary home

The police operation in Calgary, in the Penbrooke Meadows neighborhood, began on Thursday, March 14, 2024 after a man fired more than 100 shots in the direction of officers who intended to execute a search warrant.

The 30-hour police operation in east Calgary ended with the death last night of 'armed man who had barricaded himself in a residence in the Penbrooke Meadows neighborhood.

On Thursday afternoon, officers attended a residence to execute a search warrant regarding a firearms investigation.

According to them, the man barricaded himself in the residence then fired more than 100 shots in their direction, without injuring anyone.

Efforts to negotiate a peaceful end ended around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Police say the situation is escalating without giving further details.

Calgary Police Tactical Team officers and RCMP Emergency Response Team officers used their weapons of service during the operation. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene. No further information was provided.

During the police operation, houses in the neighborhood had to be evacuated by measure precaution.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was contacted to investigate. During the press conference, presented at midnight, Police Chief Mark Neufeld described the conclusion of the police operation as unfortunate.

He claims that the agents used several tactics and resources during the situation, including intermittent negotiations with the&# x27;individual for more than 30 hours. He adds that the safety of the community was their main concern.
