Pornographic App Comes to iPhone, Thanks to EU DMA

Apple has always been against pornographic apps on the App Store. But today, in the European Union, it is possible to install applications on the iPhone, without going through the official Apple store. Indeed, the Digital Markets Act, a regulation that aims to regulate digital giants, forced the firm to end the App Store's monopoly on the distribution of iOS applications. As a result, EU users can now download their apps from alternative stores, such as the AltStore.

And precisely, this alternative to the App Store recently made headlines by distributing the very first pornographic application for the iPhone. “The iPhone turns 18 this year, which means it’s finally old enough to get more ~mature~ apps.”, wrote the AltStore, in a post on social networks. According to TechCrunch's explanations, this app was created by an independent developer who, in the past, focused on the jailbroken iPhone market.

Apple's reaction

Of course, Apple does not approve of the publication of this category of application in the iPhone app stores. Here is what the Cupertino company said, in a statement relayed by TechCrunch: “We are deeply concerned about the security risks that hard pornography applications of this type create for users in the EU, especially children. This app and others like it will undermine consumer trust in our ecosystem, which we have been working to make the best in the world for over a decade.”

In order for this application to be available on iPhone, it still had to go through the notarization process. This allows Apple to verify that applications distributed by competitors of the App Store respect basic standards. Nevertheless, the firm had warned that it “is up to each distributor of alternative applications to examine applications in accordance with its own processes and policies.”

On this subject, Apple also wanted to specify that it “certainly does not” approve of this pornographic application and that it would never distribute it on the App Store. “The truth is that the European Commission is asking us to allow its distribution by marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic, who may not share our concerns about user security”, we also read in Apple’s press release.

  • In the European Union, the Digital Markets Act forced Apple to open iOS to App Store competitors
  • One of these competitors distributes the very first pornographic application for iPhone
  • Even though this app had to go through Apple’s notarization process, the firm indicates that it does not approve
