Temu is once again in the crosshairs. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) accuses the Chinese platform of offering products that do not comply with the regulations in force within the European Union (EU).
Despite its resounding success since its arrival in France in 2023, the e-commerce site owned by PDD Holdings continues to make headlines, whether it is for its questionable processing of personal data or its suspicious business practices.
After filing a complaint against Temu last year, accusing it of misleading its customers, BEUC has published a chilling report. Tests carried out by the association on products sold by the platform in Denmark and Italy have revealed significant breaches of European rules.
These include “small parts that are too easily detachable in children's toys and baby products, which can cause suffocation, missing or incorrect ingredient lists in cosmetics, or very dangerous electric heaters “, the organization details in a press release. “In some samples, none of the products checked were compliant “, it continues.
As a reminder, Temu is one of the major online platforms falling under the scope of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The law requires it to comply with strict measures, as it has a significant number of users within the European Union.

« Temu may have taken Europe by storm because it is cheap, but it is an entry point for illegal products that have no place in our markets. There is a clear and widespread problem with Temu that the authorities urgently need to address. Dangerous products are entering consumers' homes, while many European companies that take the time to comply with our laws are subject to unfair competition “, slams Agustín Reyna, BEUC's Director General.
For its part, the Chinese company assures that it takes product safety seriously, while continuing to invest in strengthening its trust and safety team.
These statements should not be enough. BEUC urges the European authorities to act to prevent Temu from offering such products on the European market. And precisely, this Wednesday, February 5, the legislators of the Old Continent should strengthen customs controls on goods shipped by e-commerce platforms, notably Temu, Shein and Amazon.
