Presumed Innocent: Why I Loved This Apple TV+ Gem ?

The least we can say is that we didn’t see it coming. While this month of June is very busy in terms of series releases (The Boys, House of the Dragon, or The Acolyte), Apple TV+ has chosen to draw Presumed innocent, his new fiction with Jake Gyllenhaal. I loved the start of this production adapted from the eponymous book released in 1987. The latter had already been brought to the screen in a film by Alan J. Pakula with Harrison Ford.

A very gripping story

We follow the daily life of Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is the chief deputy district attorney of Chicago and works under the orders of Raymond Horgan (Bill Camp). Everything is going well in his life and he is in perfect love with his wife Barbara, played by Ruth Negga.

But everything changes with the assassination of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), another rising star in the prosecutor's office. The case is entrusted to Rusty, but we quickly learn that the latter had formed a torrid romantic relationship with the deceased. Quickly, the latter, who knows the legal mysteries wonderfully, becomes the ideal culprit, while his couple begins to struggle.

I was clearly not bored for a single second during these first two admirably written episodes. The plot even thickens over time with new characters and surprises everyone who already knows the original story. I also enjoyed seeing these internal power struggles within the judiciary and the omnipresent political issues (prosecutors are elected by universal suffrage in the United States).

A perfect casting

The great strength of Presumed Innocent also lies in its excellent cast. I of course think of Jake Gyllenhaal as perfect in his role. We find in him this self-sacrifice tinged with sadness and his little sad eyes that he already displayed in Zodiac and Prisoners.

Special mention also to Ruth Negga who particularly shines in the role of Barbara Sabich. She tries as best she can to maintain this family unit which is gradually slipping away. This woman is going through very contradictory emotions and she transmits her pain through the screen.

It's an understatement to say that I'm waiting for the sequel to this extremely well-crafted thriller . David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, Ally McBeal), the creator of the series, will -will he succeed in surprising us by offering a truly revisited version of the original story ? Answer at the end of July.

If you have already been able to see the start of the series Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+, do you share my enthusiasm? Don't hesitate to give your point of view in the comments.
