“A relief”: Princess Kate announced Monday that she had completed chemotherapy treatment in a message posted on social media, six months after revealing she had cancer.

“I can’t tell you what a relief it is to finally have finished my chemotherapy treatment,” says the Princess of Wales, wife of William, the heir to the British throne.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” the 42-year-old princess continues in the message, accompanied by a video in which she appears surrounded by her husband and their three children, George, Charlotte and Louis, walking and playing in nature.

The video, in which the princess is dressed in a light dress with her hair blowing in the wind, was filmed in August in Norfolk, eastern England. It conveys the image of a united and happy family, having a picnic and playing cards. Kate smiles, resting on her husband's shoulder.

Yet throughout these months, it has been a matter of “finding a way to navigate turbulent waters and uncharted waters,” she explains.

“The cancer experience is complex, frightening and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you,” the princess continues.

“My road to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” she warns. “However, I look forward to returning to work and undertaking public activities in the coming months when I am able.” »

« A huge shock »

Kate Middleton, adored by the British and who appeared almost every day in the press, suddenly disappeared from the media landscape after Christmas 2023.

She had been hospitalized in January for “abdominal surgery.” The palace had indicated that she would probably not resume her official duties before Easter.

All sorts of rumors had appeared on social media.

And at the end of March, she herself revealed, in a moving video, that she had cancer, without specifying its nature.

Alone, on a bench, visibly tired, she spoke of a “huge shock.” Another blow for the royal family, since King Charles III had also announced at the beginning of February that he had cancer.

Long applause

Kate Middleton first appeared in public on June 15 for the Sovereign's Birthday Parade. She waved to the crowd from the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the royal family.

Prince William's wife was warmly cheered by the crowd that came out in large numbers to attend the Trooping the Colour military parade held every June.

Her last public appearance was in early July at Wimbledon, where she presented the trophy to the winner of the tennis tournament, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. There again, she received long applause.

In her message on Monday, the princess expressed her “gratitude” for all the support she has received. “The kindness, empathy and compassion of everyone has been truly humbling,” she said.

Kate Middleton concluded with a word for those “who are on their own cancer journey.” “I stand with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness can come light, so let that light shine,” she said.

Charles III, 75, resumed his public engagements in the spring after suspending them for several months.

He is due to make an official visit to Australia and Samoa with his wife Queen Camilla this fall.
