The Legault government is launching an advertising offensive specifically targeting young adults in the hopes of convincing some of them to become teachers, in a context where the shortage of teachers remains a hot issue in the education system.

According to the government, the “Become a teacher!” campaign is aimed particularly at young adults aged 18 to 35. It will be deployed over the next two months in traditional media and on social networks.

In addition to more conventional advertising, the campaign will also include a series of humorous capsules featuring teachers who will come and talk about their daily lives and present reasons for choosing this profession.

According to Education Minister Bernard Drainville, the campaign will present the benefits of teaching to young people who might be tempted to choose this career, but also promote the teaching profession to the entire population.

“We know that it won't solve everything and that we still have challenges, but to attract new teaching talent, it is important to establish a positive discourse around education and highlight the major advances in the latest collective agreements,” stressed Minister Drainville in a press release.

During the last school year, the number of teachers missing from classes once again made headlines.

A few days before students returned, Mr. Drainville reported that there were approximately 5,700 teaching positions to provide. This number decreased in the following weeks.

On Monday, Mr. Drainville recalled that under the new collective agreements, the annual salary will be $65,000 upon entry for new teachers. He also noted that classroom assistants will be deployed in one in two classes in elementary and preschool.
