For his 2nd tournament, Rafael Nadal put in a superb performance by eliminating Alberto Costa, world number 7 and winner of RG 2002. He was eliminated by the future finalist of the tournament, Guillermo Coria (6-7, 2-6). He became the first player aged 16 to enter the world top 100 since Michael Chang in 1988.
