Michel Cazenave, a 74-year-old retiree, sells cans containing air from his region. Named “Pour avoir l'air… Béarnais”, these are selling, against all expectations, by the hundreds, reports Le Parisien.

“Brewing air, I know it!”

The brand “Pour avoir l'air…” has been officially registered since 2008. While the practice may seem surprising, Michel Cazenave is very serious. “At first, I gave some to friends, to family, a few gifts, like that”, says the retiree, quoted by Ouest France.

But now, they are on sale and the business is managed from Pau “The boxes are sold online on the site but also in about fifteen physical stores.” But what do they contain? If the septuagenarian keeps a certain amount of mystery regarding the manufacture of his product, he nevertheless indicates “harvesting pure air from the Béarn mountains”, then putting it in cans.

In other words, these cans are literally empty. Yet they are selling. Ads are even posted on social media.

“I sold 250 boxes to a winemaker who wants to sell a wooden box with his bottles and, as a nod to the region, one of my preserves. A restaurateur once told me: 'You have to be stupid to buy an empty box'. I told him that 5 euros for some good Béarnais air was worth it the pain. He finally decided to buy boxes from me to sell them in his restaurant!”, says the retiree.

“Before selling Béarn products on the markets, I worked for twenty years in banking and ten years in insurance. So I know how to stir up trouble!”, jokes Michel Cazenave. With the end-of-year holidays approaching, if some people are lacking ideas, here is a gift that is, to say the least… original.
