Regulars at Nîmes recycling centers are not running after sales at all costs

Laurie préfère se rendre dans les recycleries plutôt que de profiter des soldes. Midi Libre – Y. B.

Les soldes d’hiver, qui se déroulent du 8 janvier au 4 février, ne font pas forcément l’unanimité.

As the winter sales period opens this Wednesday, January 8, this hunt for cut prices is not unanimous among Nîmes shoppers. This clientele does not run at all costs towards the stores that display reductions. They prefer to hunt at flea markets or go to recycling or resource centers such as Réa-nîmes, Le Tremplin or Greenouille.

In the latter's store, located at 10 rue Émile-Jamais, everyday objects, decorations, but also books and especially clothes, the result of deposits from individuals, attract a wide clientele. “Attendance is up, with more young people, but the political context has affected the average basket amount”, says Julie Claverie, head of the recycling center. She notes a stability in donations.

It's the opportunity that makes the thief

Unemployed, Nathalie confides that she is a regular at Greenouille, this other model of consumption, far from the frenzy of cut prices: “For many years, I have enjoyed rummaging, finding an item of clothing that is out of fashion but that you can wear and thus stand out from the others. It's as if I had found a treasure. When I find something I love, I am happy”, she says. “Recycling centers are good when you have a small budget”, rejoices Nathalie who lets her whole family benefit, including her grandchildren, she who does not find the same pleasure in shopping in the aggressive brands on discount prices.

A feeling shared by Laurie, who came to Greenouille with her son to buy books. “Opportunity makes the thief!”, she exclaims with a smile.

On this day of the launch of the sales, this resident of the Gambetta district preferred to take a detour to the shop on rue Émile-Jamais: “In the recycling centers, you get good deals. Second-hand goods are interesting in the economic context. Why throw away or destroy an object? ? I am a fan of the book boxes that are increasingly found in the neighborhoods of Nîmes as well as the Geev donation application. There is no exchange of money.”

Another way of consumption

This sensible consumer is wary of the principle of sales, promotional offers throughout the year: “We are pushed to buy what we don't need, which is a problem when you have a tight budget”. “More and more, people come to us to look for prices and something atypical”, says the manager of Grenouille even if she can count on loyal customers who have another mode of consumption in mind: “I am against sales”, says Julie Claverie who allows herself clearance sales at the change of season (the next one in March): “We are buried by these cut prices. It's unhealthy and somewhere it no longer has any meaning sense”. In this Nîmes shop, many have found it.

On January 31 and February 1, the City of Nîmes announces its big winter sale. The sales period, which began yesterday, ends on February 4 (stores authorized to open on Sunday, January 12). I subscribe to read the rest
