According to information from the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, the rider allegedly hit a car and was immediately taken to hospital. The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known.
Photos released on the Belgian media show the double Belgian Olympic champion being taken care of by emergency services, conscious and covered with a survival blanket sitting on a chair. According to initial information from his father, he hit the car of the Belgian postal service, Bpost. “He was taken to the Erasmus hospital in Anderlecht under the supervision of a medical team. He has already sent us a message, so we hope everything is fine. From what I hear, he fell by hitting the open door of a Bpost car.” His health condition is not said to be worrying with bruises and a broken collarbone. His preparation is however expected to be disrupted.
