  • Discover how fashion and liturgy come together to celebrate the reopening of Notre-Dame.

It is a global event. Closed to the public since the fire that ravaged it in 2019, Notre-Dame de Paris will welcome several hundred hand-picked guests this evening of December 7. Dozens of heads of state from around the world, including Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, will attend a solemn ceremony as a preamble to a long night of festivities.

Emmanuel Macron should first deliver a fifteen-minute speech around 7:20 p.m. to “welcome from a point of view of federation of consciences the reopening of Notre-Dame”, indicates the ©lys©e. This will be followed by a liturgical sequenceunder the auspices of Monsignor Laurent Ulrich. The Archbishop of Paris will don his most beautiful chasuble for the occasion.

Reopening of Notre-Dame: this famous stylist at the service of the clergy

He has dressed Madonna, Vanessa Paradis and Lady Gaga, as well as famous rappers like Drake and Jay-Z. It is now the clergy who will wear his label. A key figure in fashion, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has designed the liturgical vestments that the Archbishop of Paris will wear this evening, but also the 170 bishops, hundreds of deacons, priests and canons.

“I was asked, as I had been by Monsignor Lustiger for the WYD [World Youth Day, editor's note] in 1997, by Monsignor Ulrich who asked me to work on the paramentics, that is to say the whole set of liturgical vestments that surround the ceremony and the celebration of the Eucharist”, explained the stylist on France Inter on December 3, explaining that he wanted “to create a closeness between worship and the young generation”.

Reopening of Notre-Dame: the clergy, dressed for the seasons to come

What moves me and fills my heart with joy is that it's not just for the reopening. It's perennial. I have just created all the festive clothing for Notre-Dame in the future”, rejoices “JC/DC” on the microphone of the culture department of France Télévisions. Priests and officiants will wear their new branded finery during the upcoming highlights of the liturgical year (Christmas, Easter, etc.)

For the designer, these “vestments and ornaments” custom-designed for the clergy want above all “to honor the noble simplicity of the liturgy, the solemnity of the place and the moment as well as the momentum of a contemporary creation”. Let us specify that this sacred wardrobe would never have been able to see the light of day without the complicity of the art houses of the 19M, located in the 19th arrondissement of the capital.
