Reporting IPTV pirates: the temptation of snitching

The use of illegal IPTV is clearly making rights holders nervous, whether they are television channels or streaming platforms. While tensions are rising in France over this issue, an Irish anti-piracy group has found a radical new technique to overcome fraudsters: denunciation.

An anonymous denunciation campaign launched

FACT, in partnership with the charity Crimestoppers, has launched a vast six-week campaign on Facebook and Instagram. The idea is simple: the general public is asked to denounce individuals or groups who advertise, sell illegal subscriptions to streaming services, or IPTV keys and boxes.

Internet users who take the plunge are assured of remaining anonymous since their location and IP address will not be recorded. The duo specifies in its press release relayed by TorrentFreak :

Digital piracy is a serious crime, often managed by organized criminal groups. Information provided anonymously to Crimestoppers will be fully investigated by FACT and may result in further action, including prosecution.

Failure in sight?

However, it is not clear that the Irish are very motivated to take action. Especially since there is no financial reward for such a situation. FACT CEO Kieron Sharp prefers to play on the heartstrings:

This campaign is an important step in our ongoing efforts to combat illegal streaming in Ireland. By working with Crimestoppers, we aim to empower communities to take action against digital piracy and protect themselves from the risks associated with it.

The dangers that criminal groups pose to the safety of homes are also highlighted, but it is not clear that this will convince many people. The Crimestoppers spokesperson also states that: “We should all pay our fair share”. This does not really correspond to the feeling of the public who often complain about prices being too high.

In any case, this initiative illustrates the voluntarism of rights holders. Hand in hand with the authorities, they spare no effort against pirates. Moreover, managers of illegal services increasingly end up behind bars, as we explained to you recently. The idea is to send a message of great firmness to fraudsters.
