In a social media post, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois announced that Mercier MNA Ruba Ghazal would join him as co-spokesperson for Québec solidaire (QS) starting November 16.

“It's official, Ruba is the only candidate to become the female spokesperson for Québec solidaire,” he wrote. Party members were supposed to elect Émilise Lessard-Therrien's successor on November 17, but due to a lack of competition, the Mercier MNA will take the position.

“It may take some of the spice out of our November convention, but it's a big show of confidence in her,” wrote the party's male spokesperson.

In the last race for the position of QS co-spokesperson in 2023, only three votes separated Émilise Lessard-Therrien from Ruba Ghazal. The elected official finally left her position five months later, last April. Since then, the MNA for Sherbrooke, Christine Labrie, has been acting as interim QS spokesperson. According to party rules, her interim position disqualifies her from the race for the position of spokesperson.

When she put herself forward as a candidate, Ms. Ghazal said she wanted to focus on “party unity” and “love of Quebec.” In his publication, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois confirms the candidate’s priorities, assuring that she wants to build a country, “the country of Quebec,” he writes.

“Ruba, I can’t wait to work with you!”

When she left, Émilise Lessard-Therrien blamed the organizational blockage and her difficulty in establishing herself as the head of the party to explain her departure. Many people then pointed out the similarities between the circumstances of the co-spokesperson’s departure and those surrounding the departure of the former Taschereau MNA, Catherine Dorion.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois seems determined to make this new working relationship work. “Together, with all the members of our great movement, I am convinced that we will do great things,” he concludes.
