2024 is a very good year for Samsung, which, after suffering a drop in demand for memory chips, is seeing its profits climb. Recently, the Korean giant presented its results for the second quarter of 2024, during which its revenues increased by 23.42%, while operating profit increased by 1,458%. A year ago, demand for memory chips (one of Samsung's main sources of revenue) had fallen, due to macroeconomic conditions. But today, thanks to the race for artificial intelligence, demand for these components is rising sharply. And like its memory chips, Samsung's flagships are also benefiting from the boom in artificial intelligence.
Earlier this year, Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, a series of features based on generative artificial intelligence, integrated directly into its new high-end smartphones. These features include writing assistance, an AI that summarizes articles, and an instant translator. Samsung has also developed new photo editing features that rely on artificial intelligence. And Samsung's presentation at the beginning of the year was very convincing, since sales of the Galaxy S24 series, the first models to integrate Galaxy AI, are significantly higher than those of the previous generation.
In a press release presenting its second-quarter results, Samsung explains that although revenues from the mobile division have declined, revenues and shipments of the Galaxy S24 series have experienced double-digit growth, compared to the previous generation. In other words, the flagships launched by Samsung at the beginning of the year are selling very well. And while these benefit from improvements in terms of the technical specifications, their main new feature is the presence of Galaxy AI features. Moreover, today, these features are also present on some older Samsung flagships, and on new folding smartphones.
Recently, Samsung also indicated that Galaxy AI will be present on 200 million devices before the end of the year. In addition, Samsung is already preparing new AI features for its devices. For example, the Korean manufacturer is developing a new version of its Bixby assistant (a competitor to Siri and Google Assistant) that will have better conversational capabilities thanks to generative artificial intelligence.

Apple already introduced Apple Intelligence, its new generative AI features, for iPhones, iPads, and Macs in June. But those features won’t be available until this fall. And recently, a Bloomberg article suggested that Apple Intelligence won’t be available in the first stable version of iOS 18, which will be released in September. Apple Intelligence won’t be coming to iPhones until October, via a new operating system update. And users in the European Union will have to be even more patient. In fact, due to regulatory uncertainty in Europe, Apple doesn’t plan to launch Apple Intelligence in the EU this year.
But, in any case, once Apple Intelligence becomes available, it should lead to a sharp increase in iPhone sales. Indeed, Apple's new AI features are currently only compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Therefore, to take advantage of the new features based on Apple's generative AI, its fans who do not use these two models will have to buy a new iPhone. Some analysts are already talking about Apple's next supercycle. And according to an article from Bloomberg, Apple expects a 10% increase in sales of its next iPhones, thanks to artificial intelligence.
