Information about Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone models is slowly starting to appear in the Korean media. Samsung is said to have chosen a radically different approach than Huawei for its tri-fold smartphone. The Korean manufacturer is developing a “G” folding mechanism, where the two side parts of the screen fold inwards. This configuration ensures optimal protection of the foldable panel, unlike the “Z” design. of the Mate XT which exposes part of the screen to the outside.
This technical decision is not insignificant. It directly responds to feedback from Mate XT users, who reported durability issues with the external screen. Samsung Display, the group's display division, has been working on this technology for several years. The concept was also presented at CES 2022 under the name “Flex G”, demonstrating the gradual maturity of this innovation.
Samsung's future tri-fold smartphone promises a unique user experience with a 12.4-inch screen when fully unfolded. This impressive diagonal positions it halfway between a traditional smartphone and a compact tablet. In a partially unfolded configuration, the device will offer a 10.5-inch display surface, allowing for unprecedented versatility of use.

Samsung seems to prioritize image quality for selfies, probably with a classic cutout in the screen. This decision reflects a trade-off between innovation and practicality, as under-screen camera technology is not yet fully mature.
Samsung is taking a cautious approach to the launch of this innovative smartphone. Production would be limited to less than 300,000 units, suggesting a premium positioning and limited availability. This strategy is reminiscent of the recent launch of the Galaxy Z Fold SE, which did not benefit from global distribution.
The price has not yet been officially announced, but it should be at the high end of the market. For comparison, the Huawei Mate XT is sold for around 3,000 euros, the equivalent of three iPhone 16. On the parallel market, some resellers are even offering the device for 10,000 euros, illustrating the craze for this cutting-edge technology.
The interest in tri-folding smartphones is real. Huawei has recorded thousands of pre-orders for its Mate XT, even if actual sales are between 100,000 and 200,000 units. These figures are explained by production constraints and the high price, but demonstrate the existence of a market for these ultra-premium devices.
