Samsung is facing increasingly tough competition in the folding smartphone market. Indeed, the manufacturer must now compete with a multitude of Chinese brands, including Xiaomi, Honor, etc. And on top of that, the firm is overtaken by some of its competitors in terms of design. Indeed, Honor offers smartphones foldable thinner than its Galaxy Z Fold and this year, Huawei surprised everyone by presenting the first model that folds in three on the smartphone market.

Samsung is also reportedly preparing a tri-fold smartphone

But Samsung seems determined to get its act together. In Korea, it has launched a thinner version of the Galaxy Z Fold6. And as early as next year, it could also offer a tri-fold smartphone, like Huawei’s Mate XT. In an article published this week, the Korean media outlet published an article suggesting that the design of the launch model of this tri-fold smartphone would be finalized at the end of this month, with a view to marketing in 2025. When unfolded, this device would have a format of 9 to 10 inches.

A logical continuation

Of course, for the moment, caution is advised, since this is unofficial information. However, it should be noted that Samsung Display, the branch of Samsung specializing in displays, has been working on displays that fold in three for a while. And today, it would be logical for the manufacturer to finally exploit this technology to create a commercial product.

Samsung reclaims its first place

In the meantime, Samsung has already managed to regain its place as leader in the folding smartphone market thanks to the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. According to IDC data, Samsung was relegated to second place by Huawei in the second quarter of 2024. Its market share was 16.4%, compared to 27.5% for Huawei. But in the third quarter, thanks to its new models, the Korean giant rose to 51.2% market share, and was able to regain its first place.

Samsung is forced to innovate

In any case, Samsung can no longer rest on its laurels and must now innovate a little more to remain competitive against Chinese brands. And in fact, the manufacturer has already given a small preview of its strategy for 2025, during the presentation of its latest quarterly results. In a presentation, the brand indicated that it will innovate in terms of design and that it will optimize its artificial intelligence features for foldable formats.
