The year 2024 is a good year for Samsung smartphones. Indeed, by including Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series, then on its new folding smartphones, the Korean giant has taken a step ahead of most of its competitors, including Apple. As a reminder, Galaxy AI is a series of features based on artificial intelligence, which improves the user experience, as well as photo features. Among the new features included in Galaxy AI, there is an instant translator, a writing assistance function, and even an assistant that generates article summaries.
On the hardware side, however, the Galaxy S24 and Samsung’s new foldable smartphones are more or less just improved versions of the models released in 2023. But the good news is that Samsung is finally preparing a brand new smartphone that will be radically different from those it has released before. At least, that’s the promise of TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile division, in an interview with the Australian Financial Review. “[…] this new era of mobile AI requires new hardware requirements, new performance, new form factors, opening up new possibilities, so that mobile AI can be better exploited with new hardware requirements,”, he said.
TM Roh was not specific about the new form factors that Samsung is exploring. However, it could be a smartphone with a rollable screen, or a smartphone that folds into three. In any case, the idea is to offer mobile devices, but with even larger screens. “In terms of new form factors, we could perhaps have even more optimized combinations of portability and large screens”, declares the boss of Samsung's mobile division. He also believes that as the AI integrated into smartphones tends to become multimodal (which processes other formats in addition to text), it could be interesting to offer devices with new sensors that take advantage of this multimodality.

Regularly, this subsidiary presents concepts or prototypes of devices that have rollable screens, or that also have a hinge. However, for the moment, these technologies are not yet commercialized.
Otherwise, in his interview, TM Roh also discusses the prices of foldable smartphones. While developing new premium experiences, Samsung is aware that some consumers are waiting for the arrival of more affordable foldable smartphones. In his interview, the head of the mobile division indicates that Samsung is already working with its partners to lower costs.
In any case, this little teaser from TM Roh is important, because Samsung could soon be overtaken by its competitor Huawei, which is preparing to launch a device that folds in three.
