The year 2024 is a good year for Samsung smartphones. Indeed, by including Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S24 series, then on its new folding smartphones, the Korean giant has taken a step ahead of most of its competitors, including Apple. As a reminder, Galaxy AI is a series of features based on artificial intelligence, which improves the user experience, as well as photo features. Among the new features included in Galaxy AI, there is an instant translator, a writing assistance function, and even an assistant that generates article summaries.

An important new development in sight

On the other hand, on the hardware level, the Galaxy S24 and Samsung's new folding smartphones are more or less just improved versions of the models released in 2023. But the good news is that Samsung is finally preparing a brand new smartphone that will be radically different from those he has released before. In any case, this is the promise of TM Roh, the boss of Samsung's mobile division, in an interview with the Australian Financial Review. “[…] this new era of mobile AI requires new hardware requirements, new performance, new form factors, paving the way for new possibilities, so that mobile AI can be better leveraged with new hardware requirements”, he said.

TM Roh was not specific about the new form factors that are being explored by Samsung. However, it could be a smartphone with a rollable screen, or even a smartphone that folds into three. In any case, the idea is to offer mobile devices, but with even larger screens. “In terms of new form factors, we could perhaps have even more optimized combinations of portability and large screens”, declares the boss of Samsung's mobile division. He also believes that as the AI integrated into smartphones tends to become multimodal (which processes other formats in addition to text), it could be interesting to offer devices with new sensors that take advantage of this multimodality.

Samsung Display is already imagining futuristic smartphones

In any case, on a technological level, Samsung Display, the Samsung subsidiary specializing in screens, has been exploring new ideas for smartphones for years. Regularly, this subsidiary presents concepts or prototypes of devices which have rollable screens, or which in addition to a hinge. However, for the moment, these technologies are not yet commercialized.

Otherwise, in his interview, TM Roh also mentions the prices of folding smartphones. While developing new premium experiences, Samsung is aware that some consumers are waiting for the arrival of more affordable folding smartphones. In his interview, the head of the mobile division indicates that Samsung is already working with its partners to lower costs.

In any case, this little teaser from TM Roh is important, because Samsung could soon be overtaken by its competitor Huawei, which is preparing to launch a device that folds in three.

  • Samsung has managed to boost its premium smartphone sales by integrating new features based on generative artificial intelligence
  • But in terms of hardware, and especially in terms of design, we have improved versions of the models released in 2023
  • The good news is that Samsung is preparing a completely new form factor
  • And if this one does not give any details, we could see the arrival of smartphones with a rollable screen or smartphones that fold in three
