Smartphones are becoming increasingly indispensable in everyday life. But they have a huge flaw that manufacturers have not really managed to eliminate in recent years: battery life. Indeed, the technology used by batteries has seen very little evolution, while the uses of smartphones are multiplying. And with the advent of generative AI, we expect users to be even more glued to their phones. But the good news is that Samsung has a way to allow smartphones to last longer. And it does not involve working on the battery, but rather on the screen.

Indeed, the screen of a smartphone is one of the most energy-consuming components. And recently, Samsung Display revealed that it is working on a new OLED display design that would significantly reduce the power consumption of this component on smartphones. At a trade show in Korea, a Samsung Display executive explained that the manufacturer is conducting a lot of research to reduce the energy consumption of screens, or even to replace certain technologies that affect this consumption. For example, Samsung Display is developing screens that do not use polarizing film so that they consume less energy. And, by combining several techniques, the manufacturer can manage to reduce this consumption by half.

Samsung is all about AI

For Samsung Display, the arrival of artificial intelligence on smartphones will change consumer needs. And it is also important to remember that the Korean giant's mobile division has already put AI at the heart of its strategy. As a reminder, at the beginning of the year, Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 series, which integrates many features based on generative AI, which can assist the user in writing text, summarizing a press article or even providing an instant translator. These features then arrived on older high-end smartphones, and they are also offered on Samsung's new folding smartphones.

Samsung has set a goal of making Galaxy AI (the name for these AI features) available on more than 200 million devices by the end of the year. And Samsung is already working on new AI features for its smartphones. For example, the manufacturer plans to offer an improved version of its Bixby digital assistant, which will rely on generative artificial intelligence. This improvement should make this assistant smarter, and allow the user to have more natural conversations with Bixby.

“We are strengthening and bringing more AI capabilities to our products,”, said the head of the mobile division, TM Roh, quoted by CNBC in July. “As consumers further utilize AI capabilities, they can truly feel the convenience and benefits it brings. I firmly believe that these Galaxy AI and mobile AI are strong motivators and drivers for purchasing new products.”

  • Samsung Display is working on a new way to design smartphone displays that could reduce power consumption
  • This will have a significant impact on future devices that use these screens, as it is one of the most energy-intensive components
  • This development is necessary to meet the new needs of consumers, who are gradually adopting generative artificial intelligence
  • Samsung's mobile division is already fully committed to AI, having integrated Galaxy AI features into its high-end models
