When you move into a new home, you activate various subscriptions, including the one that will cover all the household's electricity needs. The electrical power of the meter is then decisive in making the right choice in terms of electricity supply. It authorizes the consumption of a certain quantity of energy at a given time, and must be in accordance with needs. While underestimating consumption can cause problems, overestimating it can cost you a few precious euros.
Indeed, the power of the meter (expressed in kilovolt-amperes, or kVA) determines the amount of electricity that can be requested from the network at any given time. For example, if you have a 9 kVA meter, you can simultaneously consume up to 9,000 Watts (W) of electricity. Beyond that, if the power is exceeded, the system will systematically trip.
We would then tend to want to inflate the power of our meter, in order to avoid any form of untimely disconnection. However, you should know that the electricity subscription corresponds to the fixed portion that we pay monthly to our energy supplier. This is the fixed part of the bill, and the higher the power, the more expensive the subscription.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000According to EDF, in France, approximately 70% of homes have a meter power of 6 kVA. However, some experts estimate that more than one in two French people pay too much for their meter, due to an overestimated power compared to real needs. According to the supplier Octopus Energy, each year, this would represent no less than “300 million euros lost by the French“.

Also, to choose your meter power, you should arbitrate between the power of your electrical devices and your consumption habits. For example, household appliances do not all run at the same time, and while some operate 24 hours a day, like the refrigerator, others will operate in cycles, like a dishwasher, an oven or even a washing machine. On this subject, you should know that our precious microwave also has an impact on our electricity bill and we can also save a few euros by skipping a very common function.
Generally speaking, to reduce our consumption and limit our power needs, it is possible to implement eco-friendly actions. For example, we can start by turning off devices on standby (find here 7 devices to unplug to lower your bill), these invisible consumptions affect our energy bill. According to ADEM, this simple gesture could save up to 10% of energy.
