German police announced a second arrest on Saturday at a refugee shelter in Solingen as part of the investigation into the deadly knife attack that took place the previous day in the western city.

A major special forces operation took place in the evening at the shelter, which is located not far from the scene of the attack. The police did not provide any details on the identity of the person arrested or his possible involvement in the events.

Three people were killed and eight injured in the attack on Friday evening during the launch of open-air festivities to mark the 650th anniversary of Solingen, a town near Düsseldorf.

The attacker then fled, sparking a massive police manhunt.

A first person, a 15-year-old boy, was arrested earlier in the day on suspicion of possible links to the attacker.

The Islamic State group (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday, which shocked Germany.
