On November 7, the Nîmes Criminal Court sentenced a professional fisherman from Aigues-Mortes to a fine of 1,500 euros, of which 500 euros were suspended, for “use of non-compliant fishing equipment”.
This 76-year-old man, who was acting as a repeat offender, was fishing for eels in a marsh in Grau-du-Roi using a net that covered 3/3 of the surface, while the maximum size is 2/3 of the surface. “This illegal practice prevents any migration and reproduction of eels, a species classified as endangered”, specifies the deputy prosecutor of the Republic of Nîmes, congratulates, by this procedure, “the constant mobilization of the agents of the French Office of Biodiversity, of the environmental police, and the determination of justice to punish these offenses”.
