Seven people including two girls died in Israeli strikes on the city of Tyre in southern Lebanon, a stronghold of Lebanese Hezbollah, according to a new report from the Health Ministry announced on Saturday.

“Israeli enemy strikes on Tyre killed seven people, including two girls, and injured 46” in the coastal city on Friday, the ministry said, after bodies were pulled from the rubble.

Body remains were found and “will be identified through DNA testing,” it added in a statement. “Operations are continuing to search for missing persons.” »

A first report from the ministry on Friday had reported three dead and 30 injured.

On the scene, rescuers carried bodies on stretchers amidst the rubble, while rubble and pieces of twisted metal littered the street, according to images from AFP.

According to the official Lebanese news agency Ani, the strikes targeted three buildings and caused significant damage to dozens of homes.

Elsewhere in southern Lebanon, an “enemy warplane” destroyed two homes in the town of Nabatiyeh.

Israel has intensified its air campaign in neighboring Lebanon since September 23 and launched a ground offensive on September 30 in the south of that country, after a year of cross-border clashes between its army and Hezbollah.

On Saturday, the pro-Iranian movement claimed responsibility for several rocket attacks on northern Israel. He said in particular that he had targeted a military base north of Haifa and its outskirts and had shot down an Israeli drone.

Hezbollah opened its front against Israel in support of its Palestinian ally, Hamas, in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas against Israel, which triggered the war in Gaza.

Israel claims to want to neutralize Hezbollah to allow the return of 60,000 residents in the north of its territory, displaced by incessant rocket fire since the start of the war in Gaza.

More than 2,700 people have been killed in Lebanon since September 23, the majority of them civilians, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
