The alert has been given Monday late in the day, around 11 p.m. Elizabeth Pollard left her 5-year-old granddaughter in her car to go looking for her cat that night. It was then that the ground literally fell out from under her feet. A hole one meter wide and about ten meters deep was then formed and the American fell into it.
“This cavity was not there before. It probably formed when she was standing on it,”, says Steve Limani, a local police spokesman, quoted by the Guardian. More precisely, it is believed to be a “mine shaft that had been gradually covered by vegetation over the decades,”, the press specifies.
Although the hours are ticking by and no trace of Elizabeth Pollard has been discovered, hopes of seeing her alive again are increasingly slim. The authorities are nevertheless deploying drastic measures. No less than a hundred firefighters, soldiers and police officers are mobilized in the state of Pennsylvania.
“We appreciate everyone's support. Right now, all we can do is hope,” whispered the daughter of the missing woman, while the local police assured that they would not give up: “We are not giving up.”
