What happened ?

A 15-year-old girl fired multiple shots Monday at a Wisconsin school, killing a classmate and a teacher before killing herself, police said, adding that six other people were also injured in the shooting.

The local police chief said two high school students injured in the shooting are in serious condition. Shon Barnes added that the lives of three other students and a teacher who were also shot were not in danger.

The assailant was identified as Natalie Rupnow, he said at a news conference. Authorities said the shooter, who arrived at the school on time, pulled out a handgun about three hours after classes began.

322 shootings this year

A motive for the shooting, which authorities said happened in a single room at the school, was not immediately known. The attacker's family is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

It is rare for American school shootings to be carried out by girls — about 3 percent, according to studies.
Shon Barnes said a student called police to report the shooting.

There have been 322 school shootings in the U.S. this year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database, the second-highest total since the database began in 1966, after 349 shootings last year.
