Should we ban two wheels at night ? Paris is thinking about it

But this noise nuisance could soon end. In any case, this is the wish of Pierre-Yves Bournazel, municipal councilor at Paris City Hall. He asked for a ban on motorized two-wheelers to be tested between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

He made this request within ;#8217;a broader project carried by its group of elected officials (Progressives and Independents). He asks the Paris town hall and the Prefecture to set up this experiment for one year. In the rest of his project, he calls for the generalization of sound radars in the City of Lights.

Because according to him, the issue of noise pollution must be taken very seriously. “More than 80% of Parisians complain about noise daily” he assures on the microphone of BFMTV.

Do not penalize scooters

By setting up a such a traffic ban, Paris could overtake Madrid. The Spanish capital has indeed implemented such a measure. But the idea for Pierre-Yves Bournazel is not to penalize and criminalize scooters.

As has already been said above , people who use these scooters at night are generally working, in conditions that are not always easy, and for very low pay. There is therefore no question of putting obstacles in their way.

To help them continue to work, while preserving the comfort of Parisians, Pierre-Yves Bournazel is also proposing to double the aid for soft mobility to facilitate the transition to a thermal two-wheeler. and noisy to an electric model, clean and silent.

Between local residents and bikers, the noise war

But according to some, we should go even further. Questioned on the subject by BFM TV, Franck-Olivier Torro, the spokesperson for the association “Ras le Scoot” even proposes a total ban on two wheels in the city. “Why limit yourself to the night?” he asks.

On the other side of the negotiating table, the biker associations. The latter criticize a useless and liberticidal measure. Indeed, according to Jean-Marc Belotti, coordinator of the Federation of Angry Bikers of Paris and the inner suburbs, two wheels are not the only ones responsible for nighttime noise pollution.

In addition, the noise of the two wheels allows pedestrians to hear a vehicle approaching and alert it. Without this sound signature the risk of accident would only be greater, especially in the middle of the night.
