Quit smoking in 2025 ? This is a good resolution for the coming New Year. According to a study relayed by our colleagues at The Guardian, each cigarette costs the smoker an average of twenty minutes of life expectancy.

The latter states that if a smoker who consumes an average of ten cigarettes a day quits smoking on January 1st, he can save a full day of life expectancy on January 8th. He could then save fifty days of life expectancy by having quit smoking for a year.

80 000

Smoking kills up to two-thirds of long-term smokers. In the UK, it is responsible for around 80,000 deaths a year.

“Tendency to underestimate”

“People generally know that smoking is harmful but tend to underestimate how harmful it is,”, says Sarah Jackson, author of the study. “On average, smokers who don't quit lose around a decade of life. That's ten years of precious time, life and meaningful moments with their loved ones. close.”

It is also explained that a cigarette smoked reduces life expectancy by 17 minutes for men and 22 minutes for women. The authors emphasize that women must stop completely to see effects on their life expectancy.

50% is the percentage of risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke in people who smoke twenty a day, compared to those who consume only one a day.
