As Clara Chappaz prepares to leave the head of the French Tech Mission, her successor will take over in a context of profound change. Both at the national and international levels.

A decisive role for French start-ups

« If you like talking to hundreds of entrepreneurs, investors, political and associative figures, all united in a single goal, to grow the La French Tech ecosystem even more, this adventure is for you! » This is the job offer that the 34-year-old manager published on LinkedIn last month, when she announced her departure from the French Tech Mission.

While his successor remains unknown, we know that his role will be decisive for the French start-up ecosystem. Founded in 2013, the administration is attached to the General Directorate of Enterprises, within the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty. It aims to structure and promote the growth of French start-ups through various initiatives.

Changing context

This transfer of power comes at a pivotal moment for the tech landscape. Despite the appointment of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister, the National Assembly remains very divided. A situation that creates a climate of uncertainty for many sectors. In addition to having to navigate troubled waters, the new leader of the French Tech Mission will have to adapt to a new reality.

The startup ecosystem is no longer what it was when Clara Chappaz arrived. It was then benefiting from the boom affecting the tech sector in the context of the pandemic. Fundraising is less common, while more and more companies are going bankrupt. The sector is also seeing the emergence of new players like Mistral AI. The start-up is valued at 6 billion euros, after only one year of existence.

Aligning with the French Tech 2030 plan, the French Tech Mission is now focusing on the technological spin-offs and economic impact of start-ups.

What profile to take over the head of the French Tech Mission ?

The organization can also rely on successes. With nearly 30 unicorns to its name, France has bold ambitions, aiming to reach the 100 mark by 2030. Diversity is at the heart of this entrepreneurial effervescence, with companies emerging in a wide range of sectors: from manufacturing to mobility solutions, including health technologies.

Maya Noël, head of France Digitale, the association representing start-ups and investors in the French digital ecosystem, shared her vision of the profile to be desired to lead La Mission French Tech. In an interview with TechCrunch, she explains that experience in international business expansion would be a major asset for this position.

She also mentioned the potential interest of a profile with expertise in public service, particularly valuable for navigating administrative twists and turns and ensuring effective government support.

  • The French Tech Mission will soon welcome a new leader
  • He will have to navigate in an uncertain context and a tense political climate
  • The French start-up ecosystem has changed profoundly in just three years
