Artist compensation on music streaming platforms… A vast subject! If Spotify, Deezer or Apple Music have revolutionized the way we listen to music and have brought many good things to the industry, these platforms are also regularly singled out because of their treatment of artists.

Indeed, music streaming platforms are not really known for properly compensating artists. It would be known… In an interview given to Variety, the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, even finds this remuneration unfair.

A controversial remuneration system

“Today, with music streaming platforms, singers do not receive fair remuneration”Emmanuel Macron told the American media Variety. It is true that the latter's remuneration system leaves something to be desired. According to a 2021 Statista study, Spotify pays artists 0.0028 euros per stream. At Deezer and Amazon Music, the remuneration is 0.0046 euros and 0.0043 euros respectively. At Apple Music, it's a little better: 0.0086 euros. Nevertheless, it remains very low.

But that's not the whole problem. As Emmanuel Macron points out, music streaming platforms decide to pay people who are listened to a lot. This means that many artists, less successful but no less deserving, find themselves disadvantaged and underestimated by Spotify or Deezer. In the eyes of the President of the French Republic, the model is biased. For Emmanuel Macron, French artists like Etienne Daho and Barbara Pravi should earn money like Taylor Swift.

Today, music streaming platforms apply a “market centric” or “pro rata” remuneration system. The most streamed artists are therefore the most advantaged. Indeed, their remuneration therefore depends on “their market share”. The singers who are listened to the most earn more money. So they get a portion of your monthly subscription, even if you prefer to listen to less popular artists.

Faced with the often-questioned “market-centric” system, the “user-centric” system is popular. The latter is based on individual user listening. In this system, subscribers participate in the remuneration of artists they like and want to support. This is therefore considered fairer for them, and for smaller artists. But not everything is perfect, of course. Indeed, several people talk about an unfair system for artists with a less engaged community and listeners.

In any case, these two remuneration systems are far from being advantageous for artists. This was, at least, the conclusion of the National Music Center (CNM) in 2021.
