In summary this week: useful technology against fines, the failure of automatic checkouts in supermarkets, new password leak, and finally what is changing for the& #8217;fine for speeding.

This tool (probably) means the end of fines

You are afraid of speeding ? A device, AIV, or Intelligent Speed Adaptation, becomes mandatory in all new cars sold in Europe, from summer 2024. Very concretely , the device obtains the authorized speed limit of each road, but also the risk zones, and can, by default, automatically regulate the driver's speed – thus de facto avoiding any risk of excess. The device was already present in certain recent vehicles but is therefore expected to become widespread. However, it is not infallible.

Automatic checkouts: why some supermarkets are going backwards

In the United States and the United Kingdom, pioneers on the subject, several names in mass distribution are starting to rehire cashiers. If they represented savings at the beginning, automatic checkouts are no longer as popular. The cause: too many thefts, largely unintentional, which are starting to cost stores dearly. Because you have to hire more people to check and help customers. The question is not yet really about eliminating self-checkouts, but undoubtedly about limiting their use and number – in order to find a better balance and reduce losses.

Huge password leak: are you concerned?

Researcher Troy Hunt (HaveIBeenPwned.com) announces a new massive password leak. It is possible to check if your email address is there by querying the site. This new massive leak in any case illustrates the need to adopt good practices for your online accounts. Among other things, it is recommended to change passwords regularly, but also – and the board is quite recent – to incorporate emojis, adding additional complexity for hackers who try to guess them.

The fine for excessive speeding will become very salty

Serious speeding offenses represent excesses of 50 km/h above the authorized speed. In the course of 2024, things will change. While these excesses could for the first time only be the subject of a simple fine, they will now automatically become assimilated to an offense, with all that this implies in terms of increase and passage before a judge. In addition, the vehicle may be immobilized immediately, the license suspended, and a prison sentence of up to 2 months may be imposed.
