Squid Game season 2: 3 questions we ask ourselves about the event series (new trailer)

© Netflix

At the start of the 2021 school year, Squid Gamesimply made Netflix tremble. The streaming platform had not bet on this new series coming straight from South Korea. And yet… Millions of viewers were seduced by the k-drama, making Squid Game a real hit all over the world.

In the space of a few weeks, Squid Game became much more than just a series. It's quite simple: everyone was talking about it and its impact on pop culture is undeniable. The red jumpsuits of the guards in the series were omnipresent on Halloween, sales of white Vans exploded by 7800%, a violent game swept through the playgrounds and a fake cryptocurrency even panicked Internet users. We can talk about a real phenomenon.

Faced with the success of Squid Game, it didn’t take long for Netflix to announce a season 2. After three years of waiting, we’ve never been this close to the release date of season 2 of Squid Game. So naturally, everyone has a lot of questions. Here’s everything you need to know about season 2 of Squid Game.

Let’s start with the big question about the sequel to the series directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk: Squid Game season 2 will be released on December 26, 2024 on Netflix. The streaming platform will have had fun with our nerves until the end. Indeed, Netflix had told us that season 2 would be released in 2024, but had not specified that the date would, in reality, be closer to 2025.

Good news? It seems that Netflix has not wanted to follow its recent guideline. The new seasons of its original productions are now divided into two parts in most cases, as for season 3 of The Bridgerton Chronicle, season 4 of You, season 4 of Stranger Things or the final season of Ozark. Generally, this allows to increase the lifespan of the new batch of episodes, even if it can frustrate more than one viewer. So, Netflix seems to want to deviate from its new habit.

Therefore, barring a reversal of fortune, we will be entitled to the 9 episodes (if we base ourselves on season 1 but this remains to be confirmed) on December 26. The wait was probably long enough for Netflix to be lenient.

Netflix has just lifted the veil on the trailer for Squid Game, enough to answer some of our questions. We suspected it, but it's now official: Gi-hun will indeed take over number 456. It seems like he really did abandon his daughter, whom he was supposed to join at the end of season 1 to find the organizers and take his revenge. The protagonist seems determined to get his revenge and to do so, he really intends to return to the arena. But stopping these games will be an even more complicated task than expected, between players who are not inclined to cooperate, too obsessed with money, and the emergence of new games… If #456 survived the first time, will he succeed in repeating the feat??

The least we can say is that this trailer has something to make our mouths water. It remains to be seen whether the series will not offer us a repeat, but there is enough to make us impatient to find Squid Game.

If you missed the phenomenon, it's not too late yet. Season 1 of Squid Game features penniless and indebted people who take part in a children's game tournament with a whopping 45.6 billion won (millions of euros) at stake. There's just one (tiny) detail: losing can be fatal. With so much money up for grabs, many participants will leave their values, ethics, and morals at the door.

Gi-hun is the main character and, unsurprisingly, he emerges victorious from this deadly tournament. Although he won and can forget his financial troubles, the victory is bittersweet. A true social satire, Squid Gameshook the spectators who have definitely not remained indifferent to the questions raised by the series. In season 2 of Squid Game, player #456 is thirsty for revenge. We just have to see how it will unfold…

Netflix is pinning a lot of hope on the shoulders of season 2 of Squid Game. After three years, there’s no guarantee that the exceptional success of the first episodes will be repeated. What if the phenomenon had gone out of fashion ? What if viewers had grown tired of waiting ? Especially since director Hwang Dong-hyuk had only planned one season of Squid Game. Logically, many fans fear the return of the series, fearing that this season 2 will be an extension to ride on the success of the first season. Nevertheless, the waiting time between the two batches of episodes has something to give us hope. In three years, there is enough to set up a season 2 worthy of the name. Especially since the new trailer offers great promises.

Not content with announcing the official release date of season 2 of Squid Game, Netflix gave us an unexpected bonus. At the end of the teaser announcing the launch date, the streaming platform slipped in an equally important piece of information. A season 3 is planned, and it will conclude the series. Even better ? This final season will be released in 2025. Something to be happy about ? Possibly…
