While Starlink's satellite connection already allows for very good speeds, and it is preparing an improvement that will considerably improve its network. In a recent publication on the social network X, Elon Musk indeed mentions “the next generation of Starlink satellites”.These new satellites would be so large that only a Starship would be able to launch them. But these new satellites would allow Starlink to multiply the bandwidth by 10. On the other hand, Starlink also intends to reduce the altitude of its satellites, which would reduce latency.
In other words, Starlink is planning a big improvement. According to a publication that was relayed by Elon Musk, on Friday, SpaceX filed a request with the FCC, the American telecommunications regulator, in order to carry out minor, but important updates for the network.“Together, this modification and the accompanying amendment will enable the Gen2 system to provide ubiquitous, gigabit-speed, low-latency mobile broadband connectivity to all Americans and the billions of people around the world who still lack access to adequate broadband,”, SpaceX’s filing reads.
Starlink already has thousands of satellites in orbit, but Elon Musk’s company is still churning out launches. And the upcoming upgraded Gen2 systems it plans to send into space include new, more powerful hardware that, according to the explanations sent to the FCC, is “capable of using more advanced beamforming and digital processing technologies and providing more targeted and robust coverage to U.S. consumers.”On the other hand, the new hardware is able to provide a better allocation of available resources.
For the moment, it is not known when Starlink will start to exploit these new satellites. But it should first wait for the green light from the authorities before exploiting this new technology. In any case, this improvement comes at a time when Starlink has recently started to charge congestion “fees” to certain new customers in the United States, in areas where the Starlink network is almost saturated.
Otherwise, we recall that Starlink is also preparing the launch of a mobile service that will allow 4G smartphones to connect directly to its satellites, in order to allow customers of SpaceX’s partner telephone operators to stay connected in dead zones.
