This is a welcome bit of simplification in electric car charging port standards. In a press release, Stellantis North America, the North American branch of the manufacturer, announces that all new vehicles sold in this market will switch from CCS charging ports to the same charging ports found on the Teslas.
These much more compact charging ports are sometimes called “Tesla charging ports” – ; However, they are also known under this technical name SAE J3400 (otherwise, it must be admitted, more mnemonic). In November 2022, Tesla announced the opening of its charging port to other manufacturers.
These ports will allow Stellantis vehicles to plug directly into Tesla Superchargers, without any special adapters or cables. In the United States, Stellantis is benefiting from synergistic momentum. The manufacturer is deploying, through a joint venture with six other manufacturers, its own network of charging stations, called IONNA.
Network, which will allow both direct charging of cars equipped with CCS and SAE J3400 ports. Stellantis is not the first to announce the adoption of charging ports developed by Tesla. Ford was among the first to make the announcement, followed by General Motors, Volkswagen, and virtually every major automaker in the U.S. market.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000The transition to J3400 ports will occur by 2025, starting with a handful of models sold in North America. During this transition period, Stellantis will sell its vehicles still equipped with CCS charging ports with J3400 adapters.
Enough to allow them to benefit from the infrastructure of terminals equipped with these ports, which are, understandably, on the verge of becoming the majority in the United States – in any case on the fast charging terminals. Due to the American branch of the group, we will not know if this technological choice will be taken up on the European market.
However, the charger, which is both compact and capable, already seems to be making a name for itself among other manufacturers on the old continent, so that there is little doubt that’ #8217;here we also risk finding it in many new electric cars in the near future.
Tesla's strategy, which has been opening its Supercharger network to competing vehicles for some time, as well as its charging ports, appears in any case to effectively allow the manufacturer to extend its influence by showing its ability to impose its own standards to the industry.
