Storm Eowyn: “Weather bomb”, winds at 150 km/h… the depression will soon affect France

This Friday, January 24, a storm named Eowyn will hit the west coast of France, as well as Ireland and the British Isles. Gusts of 90 km/h are expected in France. Winds of up to 150 km/h will hit the United Kingdom.

Watch out for your caps and hats. The strong winds of storm Eowyn, which will hit Ireland and the British Isles, will also hit part of France, although the latter will be less severe.

“This Friday, the cold front linked to Eowyn will water the regions of north-west France. Wind-wise, gusts could reach 80 to 90 km/h along the coast on Friday, far from the violent gusts that risk hitting Ireland and the United Kingdom”, declares Météo-France.

For its part, La Chaîne Météo announces that “Ireland has already been placed on pre-red alert for this Friday, because storm Eowyn is expected to be powerful and the most violent since storm Ciaran in November 2023”. Waves of up to 10 metres are also expected in the United Kingdom.

Weather bomb

If such strong winds are expected in Ireland it is because Eowyn “is expected to drop from 970 hPa on Thursday, to 940 hPa on Friday” in the morning when it “passes over the north of Ireland”. “It is customary in this kind of configuration to speak of a 'weather bomb'”, explains Météo-France.

“If you have to go to the United Kingdom this Friday, expect many disruptions in air traffic to reach or take off from the main airports. Ferry connections will also be affected with certainly cancellations or at best delays. Finally, unlike during storm Ciaran, the cumulative rainfall will remain moderate and does not raise fears of major flooding. We generally expect 20 to 40 mm under the passage of the storm”, specified La Chaîne Météo.
