In the wake of Netflix's success, many players wanted to take over the streaming market. This is how players like Amazon, Disney, Apple, and HBO have decided to launch their own platform. This confrontation was described as a war by some observers, and above all it led to massive and unprecedented investment in the audiovisual industry.

These services have produced billions of content: series, films, reality TV shows… in an attempt to outwit the competition. What conclusions can we draw a few years later? Streaming doesn't make money for everyone.

Disney+ beaten by Netflix across the board

For example, Disney, which recorded a net profit of $1.279 billion in 2022 , loses $10 billion with media and entertainment division (which includes the Disney+ platform). On the other hand, Netflix was able to do well with a net profit of $4.5 billion last year.

The observation is the same in France regarding the popularity of the two services. If we refer to the figures provided by the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom) and the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (Arcep) concerning digital uses in 2022, the results are even impressive.

Thus, Netflix is by far the most watched platform in France with 60% market share. Amazon Prime Video ranks second (13%). As for Disney+, it completes this podium with 12%, just ahead of Canal+ services at 10%.

Finally, Disney remains very far from its rival in terms of the number of subscribers. In its latest figures provided in August, the entertainment giant announced 146 million customers for Disney+, while its rival claims 238 million worldwide.

Of course, nothing is ever recorded in marble and the balance of power could be reversed in the future. Far from being discouraged, Disney has indicated, through its CEO, Bob Iger, a tightening of its tolerance towards password sharing in 2024.

This has d elsewhere already started in Canada. On site, subscribers indeed received an unequivocal message: “You cannot share your subscription outside your home. The term “home” refers to all the devices associated with your main personal residence and used by the people who reside there.“
