Tap water is no longer drinkable in several towns in Normandy

In several municipalities in Seine-Maritime, the quality of the water has deteriorated due to the contamination of a water reservoir. It is no longer drinkable in homes.

Water quality is degraded in 17 municipalities in Seine-Maritime. All of the drinking water in Anneville-sur-scie, Aubermesnil-Beaumais, Bois-Robert, Le Catelier, Les Cents-Acres, La Chapelle-du-Bourgay, La Chaussée, Cropus, Notre-Dame-du-Parc, Sainte-Foy, Saint-Honore and Val-de-Scie Cressy is affected. But in other towns, only certain areas are targeted: the hamlets of Guerrots and Longuetuit in Heugleville-sur-Scie, 40% of the upper eastern part of Longueville-sur-Scie, the hamlets of Baudribos and Brennetuit in Saint-Hellier and the hamlets of La Corbiere, Ste Catherine, La Petite and Grande motte in Val-de-Scie Auffay.

In total, 10 municipalities in total and 7 municipalities in part, or approximately 4,220 inhabitants are affected. This announcement follows the report from the Normandy Regional Health Agency (ARS), published on the evening of Tuesday, November 19, 2024. According to the ARS, the water has become unfit for consumption due to “the contamination of a buried water tank” by runoff water, caused by clay and silt particles from land erosion following heavy rainfall. This phenomenon may be associated with a risk of microbial contamination, the health authority said.

The press release indicates that tap water should not be used for “food purposes, drinking, brushing teeth, washing infants, preparing food, and ice cubes”. Tap water can nevertheless be used for other purposes (toilet, shower, WC), specifies the ARS.

The return to normal should be “rapid”, but these preventive measures remain important to follow while waiting for new information from the community and the operator.
